I actually was "born the son of a football coach" and he's as good as it gets as a Dad, and a "coach". But it's not just about "football". This song is about those folks who "coached" us in any sport, taught us, raised us, motivated us, pushed and pulled us, inspired us, believed in us, picked us up when we were down, showed us the way." We are all the son or daughter of "coaches." They come in all shapes and sizes; sometimes parents. This song was rolling in my head unfinished until I watched my Dad beat back cancer a few years ago. I knew afterwards how to finish the tune: "There'll come a time when all seems lost, when you're climbing uphill and the fight feels fought, but you keep on scratching and clawing your way, knowing younger eyes are watchin you play. Well you show then all that you never do quit and you give your all to the very last bit..." We gain so character from sports, and teamwork and effort, losing, winning. But only half win while the other half loses each and every game. So we know life has to be about about something much bigger than wins and losses; it IS about life itself. And that something is what this song is about. This is dedicated to my Dad, Gaines Massey. He said, "Well, I've talked the talk; we'll see how I walk the walk." I'm here to tell you he is still walking the walk and doing it the right way. For so many reasons, sports inspire to be our best. Thought that worthy of a song. Thanks for listening! Mike
