This video features a performance of Bb Blues in a jazz style.

Jazz-style bass lines offer a lot to learn, so I hope you enjoy it.

Jazz Blues typically loops in 12 bars but with jazz-style chord progressions. This is also known as a walking bass line. Playing these lines will help you understand bass positions better and take the first step toward playing bass more freely.

1. Play the root note to feel the chord progression.
2. Add the 5th to the root for the bass line.
3. Add the 3rd to the root and 5th for the bass line.
4. Add the 7th to the root, 5th, and 3rd for the bass line.
5. I also played the melody of “Blue Monk.” Many bassists are not used to transitioning from a bass line to a melody, so I included this for practice. It also serves as an introductory exercise for bass solos.

For the right-hand technique, lightly place the side of your right hand on the bridge to half-mute the strings while playing with your thumb. This technique creates a double bass-like sound.

Tabs are included in the second half of the video, so watch it multiple times for reference.
