To play better phrases, we need to spend more time with chords instead of just scales. I love scales, they’re great for traveling between notes and creating connections. But the real magic happens in the chords.
I always focus on things like alternating secondary dominants, tritone substitutions, and retrofitting II-Vs. This way, my brain gets used to thinking in terms of multiple chords, not just one. It takes time, so be patient!
I’m playing over a I-II-III-IV progression in C. Next time you see a D minor 7 coming up, try thinking of A7, Eb7 or E minor. You’ll be surprised at the new possibilities this opens up!
