This spoken word video is the first in a series of twenty, prepared for family and friends in the lead up to Christmas Day. I hope this series will give poetic insights into the telling of the Christmas story over the centuries. Perhaps it might spark a festive poetic tradition in families alongside the more popular singing of Christmas carols.
This first offering, Adam Lay Ybounden, relates the events of Genesis, Chapter 3. In this instalment we find Adam waiting expectantly for the long-promised Saviour, while he is in exile after The Fall. The original lyrics of this ancient Christmas carol are of unknown authorship. Unfortunately, the original accompanying music is lost to history, however the replacement music can be heard playing in the background of this video. A single manuscript of this 15th century Christian text survives today, held in the British Museum.
Wishing you a blessed Advent and Christmas season!
