1776.
The year Americans truly bought into the idea that they are worthy of independence.
The year that “Liberty or death” infected the free minds of many.
Americans were forced to put their backs against the wall.
The only place to go was forward, declaring independence from the king and his men.
Undoubtedly they remembered the pilgrims, escaping persecution, headed for the unknown.
Facing disease on the open seas where so many perished. Facing hunger and famine.
Famine led to the idea of Freedom. With free minds, our ancestors defied the king.
Those first settlers must have felt like the four horsemen had been released from the heavens.
Trying to reign in the black horse of famine. Learning how to farm, hunt, harvest and build their first homes.
The colonies grew and changed under foreign rule. As did our our hearts and minds.
By signing that declaration in 1776, each man also signed his death warrant.
Which in turn, released the wild white horse of conquest.
The king yelled, “Treason!” Americans chanted, “Freedom!”
