Toyota New Zealand has announced a limited edition variant of the ever-popular Hilux dubbed the Mako.
Based on the recently facelifted Hilux, the new edition takes its name from the mako shark and comes loaded with a host of new parts that not only look cool but also improve the pickup truck’s off-road performance.
Most notably, Toyota New Zealand has lifted the suspension by 40 mm (1.57 inches) at the front and 50 mm (1.97 inches) at the rear compared to the already off-road-focused Hilux Rugged X. In addition, the Hilux Mako includes BP-50 bypass dampers that provide compression and rebound adjustment, as well as the uprated brakes from the Fortuner that sport braided lines.
Various other modifications have been made. These include the front bumper from the Rugged X, a bash plate, LED light bar, fender flares, embossed side steps, a custom tray with a close cover, and 18-inch Rhino alloy wheels with 265/60 Maxxis Razr all-terrain tires, while inside the The Hilux Mako comes standard with bucket seats.
Slotted under the hood is the same powertrain as other Hilux variants, namely a 2.8-liter turbodiesel that is rated at 201 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.
The 2021 Toyota Hilux Mako is priced from NZ$79,990 (US$52,985). While that’s a lot of money, the truck will be relatively rare with just 250 examples set to be built each year by Toyota’s New Zealand division.
