Hi, I’m Abram from 30 Day Singer and here are 4 hacks for developing vibrato.
1) Space
Vibrato occurs as a product of healthy singing and is a natural process once you get the right balance of resonant space, breath pressure, and relaxation of the upper body.
Let’s start with finding resonant space. Vibrato is most likely to occur with a slightly lower larynx and a lifted soft palate. This creates more internal space for your sound to bounce around. When taking in a breath allow your larynx to drop slightly, but avoid pushing it down with too much force. You don’t need to hold it in this spot. At the same time breathe with the space of a tall AW vowel. Round over this open space with your lips to sing the sound Buh. This will make your cheek pop out as well as help you maintain the hollow internal shape and sing.
2) Spin
Another necessary component for vibrato is “spin,” also known as breath support. We need spin to get our vibrato in motion through our resonant space. I recommend exercises with short detached bursts of sound, known as staccatos. Feel the difference in energy from a low note to a 5th higher. Pulse each note 3 times and allow the top note to sustain for a moment longer hopefully with some resonant space to start up your vibrato.
3) Changing Direction
Another hack for vibrato is to trick yourself into dropping naturally into vibrato. It’s very common for vibrato to occur at the ends of our phrases. However, when many beginning singers try to “make” vibrato happen on command, they often get rigid and end up stuck with a straight tone. A great trick for this is to practice rapidly changing direction with your voice on a simple pattern.
4) Imitation
My last trick is to use your innate ability to imitate others. Sing along with a friend, teacher, or recording of a singer who uses a lot of vibrato. Watch them closely and imitate what they are doing. We learn so many things this way and so don’t forget to trust your own internal ability to copy what you see and hear around you.
