90's Axl Rose sing TSwift is my new jam!

When I was talking with @Alexaraeemusic for my Arts Management class, we got on the topic of AI in music and things got weird fast. Like, "Axl Rose singing Taylor Swift" weird.

There's this trend where people are cloning famous voices and making them sing anything. Or better yet, they're generating entire albums “in the style of” Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, or 50s music. There’s an AI-generated Zeppelin 50s style album on YouTube with nearly a million views. And guess what? It’s flying under the radar of most copyright detection software.

Here’s the issue: when you cover a song the right way, you go through an agency, like the Harry Fox Agency, to get your licensing sorted. But when you completely rewrite the lyrics or significantly change the melodies in a song, technically, that’s a whole different can of legal worms. At that point you need permission from the songwriter and publisher.And I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that these AI creators aren’t asking anyone for permission.
Same thing is happening in visual art. We've all seen the wave of Studio Ghibli AI images, right? Stunning? Yes. We all make one right? Yes. Questionably legal? Also yes.

The line between inspiration and imitation is blurrier than ever. And if we don’t start talking about this stuff, especially in classrooms, our students (and some creators) are going to step on a legal landmine thinking it’s just "cool tech."
