This is the title poem for my recent poetry book: A Selected History of Soul Speak, published by Frontenac House in the fall of 2021 as a part of their Quartet Series. The poem is also featured on my spoken word album, Soulorations.
This piece traces the influence of Black North American history and culture on the development of spoken word poetry. The poem begins during slavery and documents key moments in the history of Black poetics right up to present day. It is a celebration of just a few of the heroes of the art form, and some of the influences that have contributed to the development of my own poetic style.
Soulorations features music by Evren Oz, with special guests Courteney Brookes-Buxton on back up vocals. The painting on the cover of the album was created by Ilene Sova.
