Ape Rock (also referred to as Monke Rock) is a microgenre of rock music born out of the Detroit Zoo Garage Rock scene. It is characterized by high pitched spoken word vocals, repetitive, often distorted guitar riffs, complex and fast basslines, fast cowbell, or no drums at all, and a short portion being repeated for up to 4 minutes. The genre was created when an unknown perpetrator dropped a suitcase full of instruments into a cage of monkeys at the Detroit zoo.
