"Americana Me" by Sechman, Ott & Borden (or SOB). "Americana Me". A song written by Mentor Williams, the late brother of Paul Williams and the writer of the hit song "Drift Away". He and his brother had heard me performing at the Center for Spiritual Living.
The preacher at the CSL, was Jim Turrell. He had heard SOB play at a somewhat famous Irish bar near the Newport Mall. Asked me if we would be willing to play at his church on Sundays. Me, not a church guy, found out they would pay us, but we'd have to stay and play for the morning and afternoon services. SOB and me solo, at times with their excellent church band, played there for quite a while.
After a while we noticed that Paul Williams would come there semi-regularly and a little later his brother, Mentor started showing up. Sometimes with his wife Lynn Anderson.
At one point, I sang and played Mentor's most famous song, "Drift Away" and he said it was the best version he'd ever heard.
At some point he asked me to sing his demos on new songs he, or either Lynn had written. Also have SOB record it in a studio.
So we met him at Jamie Browning's studio and apparently, he loved it as he sat in the room playing some percussion.
