Today on Arizona Horizon, we are looking at a grant for ASU's nursing college and a production of "Black Nativity."
Professor Fang Yu of ASU's Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation joins us to discuss a $5.8 million grant the college recently received from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to create an Edward R. Roybal Center to confront the issue of aging solo and living alone while in cognitive decline. Only about 15 U.S. universities and institutes are awarded a Roybal Center. The ASU Roybal Center for Older Adults Living Alone with Cognitive Decline will build research infrastructure and advance clinical trials to develop and adapt technology-enabled lifestyle and behavioral interventions. The end goal is to create practical solutions to support older adults in maintaining their independence while managing the challenges of cognitive change.
We'll also welcome David Hemphill, executive director of Black Theatre Troupe and director Tony Wheaton. Black Theatre Troupe is presenting Langston Hughes' celebrated song play, "Black Nativity," a moving, soulful retelling of the Nativity story brought to life through vibrant gospel music, dance, and spoken word. The production will run from December 6 to December 15 at the Black Theatre Troupe, located at the Helen K. Mason Performing Arts Center, 1333 E. Washington in Phoenix.
