Born in Austria in 1833, August Bondi would join the ill-fated Austrian revolution at a young age, before fleeing the country in 1848. In the states, he learned of the evils of slavery firsthand, even finding himself lashing out in anger at an enslaved man. His loss of control led him to rethink who he was and understand how far he had strayed from the ideals of his youth. Though never a fan of slavery he immediately changed course becoming an outspoken Abolitionist and heading to Kansas to fight against slavery with John Brown.
