➡️ I'm pretty grateful that YOU guys voted for "Southbound Pachyderm" in my recent Primus poll, because I got to hear a side of the band that I didn't think existed. Despite having heard a handful of Primus songs, they've all been from the band's earliest releases, and 1995's "Tales From the Punchbowl" has a definite stylistic shift on display. This deep, moody track showcased the band's dynamic depth and was perfectly paired with the song's subject matter and music video theme: the unfortunate extinction threat faced by elephants, rhinos, and hippos. I discuss Les' masterful "full-range" approach to the bass guitar, precisely how his bass lines slowly evolve with such subtlety, his carefully-dissonant note choices, the brilliant rhythm-section chemistry offered by Tim "Herb" Alexander, how guitarist Larry LaLonde floats on top with a meandering tension, and how this entire song could be synonymous with a beautiful solo-bass piece. I think I completely misjudged this band. ????????????
