BHOTT: "I'M STILL HUMAN
a spoken word about black girl magic vs. the human heart
I read an article a few years ago about the pros and cons of black girl magic.
Black Women use magic to meet the need, make a dollar out of 15 cents, support our communities. We go through a lot and sometimes we snap, die young, have heart attacks unexpectedly (like I did at 41), even find ourselves unlucky in love because we don't value ourselves because society "ishes" on us and tells us we are not worthy or are Jim Crow caricatures like Mammy, Sapphire and Jezzebel or Tragic Mulatto. Black Heart on the Table is my peace offering to society a conversation about pain bodies, triggers, mental health, dysfunctional behaviors and getting to the journey of healing.
Healing can be seen as an act of war to folks who benefit from our oppression and confusion...
that's why I open the emotion picture with the prose from God in the Universe..
The first project EP deals with a lament...being in pain for so long that all you can do is sob and cry but then after the cry comes the work of healing, healing to transformation. In this first release from Volume 1, this is my spoken word poem "I'm Still Human".
