And although I don’t feel as if one month is enough to celebrate
Black History deserves this space, and more let me be clear
But since we’re here and I have time
I want to shine a light on the life of those who existed in a spectacular way
Individuals who defied unimaginable odds that would crush most people today
Innovators, Educators, Engineers, Demonstrators Business Owners, Activists,
Doctors, Lawyers, Scientists All who apart of the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955
Everyone who challenged the system, even if it meant they might lose their lives
We can, because of what you did We can, because of what you did
I can lead just like Martin Speak like Sojourner Write like I’m Maya Stand like I’m a million marching
We can, because of what you did
The courageous college students who sat in at Woolworth
Jackie Robinson, Bessie Coleman and all who hold the distinction of being the first
Those who fought for change and the soldiers that served The brilliant creators who never got the recognition they deserved
I salute the pioneers we know and the ones we don’t
The brains behind a groundbreaking idea that was stolen
My people are an integral part of the fabric and foundation of this nation
Generations paved the way
Making sacrifices we could never repay
No words, no song, no tribute will ever be enough
But we can honor their legacy and inspire the future for years to come
