Oebaism is a movement under the Voices Guild 254 organization, a platform that uses art and spoken word for social change in Nakuru and the entire East African population. Oebaism was born in 2015 and is the brainchild of Willie Oeba, a spoken word artist who has been at the forefront of fighting the gangs in the country through mentorship and rehabilitation of youth in gangs. Our approach includes stakeholder engagement, poetry workshops, and running an open mic that speaks against organized crime in the region. In addition, we carry out the campaign in institutions of higher learning, talking to the students on criminal gangs and ways to protect themselves from their recruitment. We also carry out themed poetry events. This includes writing workshops, readings, contests, poets on parades, and trade fairs with topics ranging from police brutality, gang violence, extrajudicial killings, human trafficking, smuggling, and child labor. The Oebaism Concert 2021 project sought to create conversations on the Confirm Gangs in Nakuru county to Normalize the conversation on social change and reforms.
