When Bob Marley visited songwriter Jimmy Norman at his New York City apartment in early 1968, he wanted to be an American-style rhythm and blues singer. Not yet a star, Marley, then 23, went to New York to learn and jam with music pioneers Johnny Nash and Jimmy Norman. They worked together on eight songs and recorded the songs on a cassette tape recorder. These same songs would eventually be rerecorded with the wailers and led to the birth of reggae music.
