It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a country in possession of good composers, must be in want of a Youtube video.
Right then guv. Let me open this bag of goodies. It’s a lot bigger than it looks like from the outside.
You can't talk about the Baroque without mentioning Purcell. Dido’s Lament remains one of the most important, beautiful and haunting, vocal compositions of the canon.
Then Handel and Mendelssohn. They…
Bah!
What now Nigel?
Typical, isn’t it? These Germans, coming over here, inventing us a national musical tradition.
That's just a fact. Handel made the country his home and was fully embraced by the Brits. He defined not only the country's concert music, but that of the broader continent like no one before him.
And though Mendelssohn never settled in the country, his tours cemented musical romanticism in the country of the romantic poets and brought us his Scottish symphony!
Speaking of Scotland, a big cheer to Luke Faulkner, who called Edinburgh his home while developing his neo-classical style. Lang may yer lum reek, Luke!
Perhaps more than anyone else, it was Elgar who picked up the baton laid down by Mendelssohn (which was Berlioz’s) and brought the overwhelming passion of romanticism to its absolute limit. His cello concerto remains perhaps the greatest composed for the instrument (shoutout Jacqueline du Pré!).
Please sir, can I have some more.
Sure thing Oliver. How about a little Bridge and Britten on the side?
Sounds lovely. About the chimney sweep thing.
Let’s put a pin in that. Bridge and Britten represent two generations of British composers wrestling with the consequences of the world wars, evolving their music and craft in the face of them, picking up elements of broader European modernist trends while never abandoning their sense of Britishness.
So please, enjoy yourselves.
