For many, Chopin embodies the Romantic spirit of his age, which his music so perfectly expresses. Born in Poland in 1810, he completed his musical studies in Warsaw at only 20 (1830), after which he moved to Paris, where he would spend the rest of his life. During the next 19 years, until his premature death in 1849, Chopin would revolutionise the piano, both as a performer and composer. He introduced an intimate, personal playing style that made use of different elements of musical and expressive improvisation. Though his oeuvre mostly comprises shorter, solo piano pieces it does not compare unfavourably with that of other giants of classical music, such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. Listen for yourself; there is often more, and more sublimely expressed, in three minutes of a Chopin Étude than in many symphonies!
