Who was Chopin?
Frédéric François Chopin (or Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin) was a Polish pianist and composer, who lived from 1810 to 1849. He was born in Żelazowa Wola and grew up in Warsaw. Already at a young age he became known for his virtuoso playing. After studying at the conservatory of Warsaw Chopin moved to Paris, where he remained for most of his life. The Polish revolt against the Russian rule sadly prevented him from returning to his beloved homeland. in 1838 Chopin moved to Majorca, where the next summer he would be diagnosed with tuberculosis. After his return to Paris Chopin lived the most happy and productive years of his life, although his health continued to decline. He passed away at the early age of 39. Chopin was a celebrity in his time and is still considered one of the greatest composers of the romantic era. Some of his most famous works are his mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, études, impromptus, and preludes.


About this video
The music in this video is one of the 24 preludes (introductory pieces of music) written by Chopin and one of his most popular works. It is often referred to as the Raindrop Prelude, due to the repeating notes that resemble the steady rhythm of falling water droplets. The first part of this prelude contains a beautifully serene theme. As the theme ends the repetition of the ’raindrop’ notes continues, but now a dark and somber melody appears underneath. It slowly grows in intensity until it reaches an epic climax. As if you awake from a nightmare the original theme finally returns and brings a peaceful ending to this prelude.
