New improvisation exercise over a I, vi, ii, V chord progression in BbMaj (BbMaj | Gm7 | Cm7 | F7). I, vi, ii, V progressions are commonly used in jazz, especially for turnarounds (at the end of the chord progression to lead back to the start).
This exercise focusses on using chord tones in a way that breaks out of ascending and descending arpeggios, by starting each bar in the 3rd inversion:
- use only chord tones
- start each bar from the 7th
- play four quarter notes per bar
- try to mix up the order of notes rather than just ascending/descending the arpeggios
- try to use the root of each chord in at least two different places on the fretboard
