"New year, new me," the saying goes. But it seems like New Year's resolutions are made to be broken. Why do we have such a hard time changing? Let's look at nature.
Some say bullfrogs and butterflies have both been born again--but that's not quite true. A bullfrog goes through a gradual change, but it's never a completely new creature, and it still spends a lot of its time in the same old environment it knew as a tadpole. A butterfly is completely transformed, a new creature that feeds on different food and flies above the life it used to live.
Our own efforts to change will eventually fail. To really succeed at being a new creature, we have to die out to the old self and be reborn of water and Spirit in Jesus Christ. That's also the only way to get into God's Kingdom. God loves us and wants us with Him forever, but the old self is sinful, and sin can't live in the Presence of the Holy God without being destroyed. But without God, there's no life, so the wages of sin is death. God doesn't want anyone to be destroyed, but after all, since He's God, it's His responsibility to make sure justice is served. But the Good News of the Gospel is that He loved us so much and didn't want us to perish, He became a Man named Jesus and took the punishment we deserved, letting His body die in our place so we could be cleansed from sin, and then He rose again to justify us and prove His victory over sin, death, and hell. Now, because of Jesus, we can have a new start right now--whether you're seeing this on New Year's Day or any other day of the year, because, "...behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation." (2 Corinthians 6.2b KJV)
It's not just a *reformation*--it's a complete *transformation.* It's a spiritual *rebirth,* a completely *new* life, being "born again," as Jesus calls it.
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. ... [5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." (John 3.3, 5 KJV)
Before being born again, we have to repent of our sins. When we're "born of water," God forgets by choice our sinful past and washes our sins away in His own Blood. When we're "born of...the Spirit," He gives us His Spirit, the Holy Ghost, to live inside us and empower us to live above sin. As long as we keep spiritually living in Christ after that, we're each "a new creature," just like a butterfly is a new creature when it comes out of its chrysalis.
"Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5.17 KJV)
