I’m Abram from 30 Day Singer and today we are going over healthy habits that help you sing with a clear and clean sounding voice.

There are a number of reasons why someone's voice sounds raspy or less focused. Sometimes it's a purposeful technique and the singer is able to switch back and forth from a clean to a more gritty vocal tone. Other times there are specific reasons for this. There are a few tricks aside from vocal rest and hydration, which will also help your tone sound clean and fresh.

Cord Compression

The first trick is finding optimal cord compression. Some singers are too breathy and this is why their tone doesn't sound clean. If this is you, then the answer is more simple. You need to work on slightly better cord compression using sounds with more glottal like G. Really listen for that ringing quality as your muscles start to strengthen. This will most likely take a few separate practice sessions so incorporate it into your vocal warm-up routine.

Softer Onset

One of the biggest reasons a singer doesn't have a pure or clean sounding tone is because of tension in the tongue, jaw, and throat. When we squeeze these areas they often disrupt the vocal folds as they are vibrating and cause distortion in our tone. Some singers do this intentionally to create a grit tone, but if it's unwanted or like this by default, then it can be a sign of vocal tension and even injury. So it's best to make sure it's a style choice and not your permanent sound.

Tension Release

Another major block to clear tone singing is tongue tension. Just move your lips and try to keep your tongue neutral with the front resting just above your lower teeth.

Use Vocal Support

The last trick is to make sure you are using your breath support. Without proper breath support our throat muscles naturally start to squeeze to compensate. Try this exercise to feel out your lower abdominal support muscles just before you start singing and notice how your upper body stays more relaxed and neutral.
