When news first broke that The Karate Kid story would continue in the form of Cobra Kai, many fans didn't know what to expect. Although the premise of approaching the series through the eyes of former antagonist Johnny Lawrence was an interesting one, it held all the potential in the world for failure. Thankfully, the writers knew what they were doing.

William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence) deserves a major heap of credit for making the show what it is. Although this is still technically a show about Daniel LaRusso, Zabka's character Johnny Lawrence shares perfect and equal screen time with his rival. The idiosyncrasies of the character are both hilarious, inspiring, and tragic, and Zabka plays them all like a pro. He's also a riot to watch on screen.

After visiting the rehab facility and questioning Shannon as to the possible whereabouts of Robbie, she mentions his former crime buddies Trey and Cruz who are currently serving a stint in jail. Daniel and Johnny head down to question them as to where Robby might be hiding out, but it takes some coercing on Johnny's part.

When Cruz decides to mouth off, Johnny smacks him several times, then brags about it during a hilarious in-car phone call with Daniel's wife Amanda. It's a knee-slapping moment that showcases just how reckless and out of touch Johnny is with everything, including (apparently) physical assault laws.

Cobra Kai is an American martial arts comedy-drama streaming television series and a sequel series to The Karate Kid film series created by Robert Mark Kamen. The television series was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, and stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka (both of whom are reprising their roles from The Karate Kid, and who also serve as co-executive producers of the series) along with Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, and Martin Kove. Cobra Kai is set 34 years after the original Karate Kid film, re-examining the narrative from Johnny Lawrence's point of view, and his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo leading to the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso.

The series launched on YouTube Red with the first two seasons being released in 2018 to 2019. In June 2020, Netflix acquired the series and the third season released on January 1, 2021.In October 2020, the series was renewed for a fourth season ahead of the third-season premiere.
