Privy to their fairly recent rise in popularity, Tattoos are by no means a modern thing. The word "Tattoo" comes from the Samoan word "Tatau" which means "to strike" and examples have been found on some mummies that date back to before 3000 BCE.

1. Israel
It may come as a surprise to find Israel on this list, but contrary to common belief there is nothing in Jewish law that prevents a jew with Tattoos being buried in a Jewish cemetery. The tattoo scene in Tel Aviv is booming at the moment with many independent artists doing stunning work. If tattoo history interests you, then visit The Oldest Tattoo Parlour in the world, Razzouk Tattoo, in Jerusalem, has been tattooing in pilgrims for centuries and they have a variety of Tattoo stamps made from wooden blocks which were originally brought from Egypt over 500 years ago.

2. Polynesia
There are a lot of islands to visit in Polynesia and all have a rich tattoo culture. Samoan Tattoo master Sulu'ape Petelo and his family still do Traditional Samoan tattoos and have also modified their designs for people without Samoan heritage.
New Zealand offers tattoos inspired by Indigenous Maori Tattooing with some artists like Steve Ma-Ching combining both Samoan and Chinese designs with beautiful precision.

3. London, England
The United Kingdom actually has the highest percentage of tattooed people in the world, and being the cultural melting pot it is, it's not surprising the London has a rich Tattoo culture. In September it holds one of the biggest annual Tattoo conventions in the world, Hundreds of the world's best artists get together for a weekend of live entertainment, dj's, craft beers, street food, and art exhibitions, so if you can time your visit to coincide, you won't regret it.

4. Japan
Japan in general has the deepest respect for it traditions and culture and its tattoo culture is no different. In the mid 18th century a new method of tattooing to hold in japan "Horimono". Using needles bundled together, stuck on the end of a piece of bamboo, Tattoo artists copied traditional art pieces, "Ukiyo-e" onto their clients bodies. This art-form was adopted by the Yakuza mafia but many artists still use this ancient technique and others, like "Horimitsu" combine traditional hand tattooing with electric machines.

5. San Francisco, U.S.A
In the 1960s and 70s San Francisco was the epicenter of the Tattoo renaissance, with names like Lyle Tuttle and Ed hardy adding to its reputation. as San Francisco real estate became more expensive some artists left, whilst others moved around the bay area. San Francisco still has some of the best artists in the world and hosts the "Bay area Festival of the tattoo arts" every October.
