Cursed Empathy - a life with poetry ©

with high empathy
sometimes feelings glide gracefully
through receptive souls
as though it’s the perfect flow
that uplifting moment of clarity
heartwarming transparency
compassionate kindness on replay

but sometimes these deep feelings
puzzle already complicated diversities
certain hearts desire to get away from me
away from my empathetic tendencies

sometimes towards me
disguised thorns dressed in elegant roses
ready to flourish off my stemless boundaries
those shameless plastic gardens
over consuming genuine empathy
into malnourished travesty

Ive experienced sharp side effects
when false guilt floods my caving chest
deprived oxygen negatively possessed
by discontent events
those times when unexplainable worry
travel beside dishonest forced regret
when doubtful hours of anxiety reflect nothing
there’s nothing left

it’s just empathy
pumping through my veins
whispering agonized analogies
while I absorb illusional pain
immersed in stolen energy
drowning inside cursed relentless empathy

my own troubled question marks tend to hide
tear stained hemorrhages beneath poetic ink
questioning my motives
is this better left unsaid?
unfelt? am I weak?
or simply unable to think…

I used to allow these deep empathetic emotions
make me depressed
as I would undress lost feelings
between tangled shades
of misplaced reasons
willingly greeting
blind painful nights
not understanding why

worry about yourself
toughen up
that voice inside of my head
now offers true strength
so I try my best
to avoid overboard empathetic madness

it’s nice to care and help
but it’s healthier to be aware
of what feelings are real
of what it takes to heal

so I write it down
mental check my strategy
kindness and caring
take a moment
name the feeling

I try hard to understand
if these feelings are my own
so that I may prevent emotions
from ripping out my focus
I do not condone my heart
to take on the world
I will not allow my body to be dragged
across over sympathize closed doors
instead of submitting to these feelings
I let them go
and I release the toxic traits of empathy
cause I am learning to cherish and control
the best complicated parts of me.
