Dampening does not replace drum tuning and choosing the right drum, cymbal, and percussion sounds. Instead, use it as a tool to achieve different results.

This mambo cowbell rings way too much for this style imo, but I really like the pitch and timbre. #DrumHack use Moongel to dampen and change the tone.

For the ride cymbal I saw Dennis Chambers use Moongel on this same cymbal and it sounded amazing.

Finally, listen to the sound the audience hears and focus on that result. If you have a good reason for why you are making certain musical choices, then you are probably doing it right!
