Drift along the shores of Loon Echo Lake and relax to the melodic call of the loon. In celebration of this magical bird, Dan Gibson’s finest recordings have been mixed with music to portray the true spirit of our northern wilderness.
In his own words, Dan Gibson described his passion for observing and recording the common loon:
“Over the past 30 years, I have been fortunate to record a wide variety of nature sounds around the world. Of all the various wildlife, the call of the common loon is the most intriguing.
The loon’s vocabulary ranges from the haunting wail to the alarming tremolo or the more lyrical yodel. Each call is different, and I always stop to listen. Sometimes I call back in an effort to initiate a conversation. I have to say that my loon call has become pretty good, and I often elicit a response!
Each summer I have watched and listened to the loons on our lake. Arriving in spring, the loon immediately begins its vocal search for a mate. With luck, a pair of loons find a suitable nesting place, mate, and rear a couple of loon chicks. Later in the summer, I would spot the loons making their rounds with the down-covered chicks in tow or riding on their backs. By September, the chicks had learned how to fly. The final loon call echoed from the head of the lake and signaled their departure for the south.
The alluring call of the loon lends a unique charm to the northern lakes. When combined with the right music, the song of the loon becomes even more captivating ang magical. With this min mind, I compiled my favorite tracks featuring loon recordings blended with beautiful music and created this album. Loon Echo Lake is a tribute to a special bird and an old friend.”
