The musicologist Alan Lomax considered African-American spirituals to be America's greatest folk music, and “Deep River” is among the loveliest. The song's reference to the River Jordon is code for the Ohio River, and escape from slavery to freedom in the North. It was made famous by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who collected and popularized the spirituals. This version, performed here by Glenn Weiser on a 1926 0-21 Martin guitar, is based on the 1917 art song arrangement by Henry T. Burleigh.
