Tell me if this sounds familiar: you learned a fancy new fiddle tune and realize you’re a solid 20-60bpm behind everyone at the bluegrass jam.

So what do you do? Turn that metronome on, play the tune, then bump up the speed ad nauseum, right? Right?!

This is a method I used for years to try to keep up with my fiddle/mandolin/banjo player, but I ultimately fell short almost every time I tried to do this…

Nobody ever told me that the way you play and phrase a tune can and probably SHOULD change depending on the tempo.

As I started to analyze some of my favorite breaks from speed demons like Bryan Sutton, Cody Kilby, Jake Eddy, Jake Workman (what is it with guys named Jake?) I began to notice on thing:

All of these guys would remove some notes from the melody!

D’OH!

The tune was going by so fast that I never realized these guys were simplifying the melody down to it’s core framework - the Skeletone Melody - and add notes back in as they were able.

Well, the cat’s out of the bag now, so if you’re interested in learning HOW to find that skeleton melody, click the link in bio to my Guitar Club for a handful of lessons on the topic.
