The swagger of bassist Paul Denman’s bass line on Sade’s Smooth Operator, the group’s 1984 breakout U.S. single, almost overshadowed Sade Adu’s ice-cool vocals.

Complimenting the lush instrumentation with a melodic edge, the bass line provides a totally rock-solid, but live groove. Among Denman’s weapons of choice included a Gretsch and a MusicMan Stingray.
