Learning double stroke can be a great way to add style to your drumming. And learning an effective strategy can help you develop quick and have stronger double strokes.
A first approach to learning double strokes is to not rely on the rebound to make the second stroke. Instead we control the second stroke just like we played the first stroke. This is to make sure that the second stroke is as strong as the first stroke. At slower tempos we even accent that second stroke for clarity in the double stroke roll. Though as the tempo increases, the accent comes down a bit and the double stroke roll becomes crisp and clear. You hear each note in the double stroke roll.
Now with that be said, using rebound comes into play at higher tempos. It is used to setup the second note so that you can throw it back down into the drumhead.
If you want to learn more about how I approach the double stroke roll, make sure to check out this live stream. I will also show you how I check the strength of my double strokes on the drumset. And I’ll also be talking about how to use double strokes and other rudiments around the drums.
