This is quite a dark cowboy song - a fictional narrative in the tradition of the folk murder ballad. It's an outlaw's recounting of a harrowing crime, and the torment he now lives with as he tries to cope with his evil deed. Listener discretion is advised, I suppose.

Apologies to @RoseAkerman for using the phrase "burned it all down", which happens to be the title of one of Rose's excellent recent songs. This was unintentional, and I suspect the line has been bouncing around in my subconscious mind since I heard Rose's song.
