Note Values & Differences, Note Values Explained, Traditional Blast Beat, Thrash Beat, Rudiments in 8th Notes, & The Anatomy of a Note.
Welcome to drum class! Today we are going to learn 8th Notes and Better Beats. Please let me know in the comments if you have any questions. I use an application called GuitarPro to write my tablature. I also use Groove Scribe, which is a free online resource. My drum kit is a Roland TD-27.
We start with a teaching/ learning tool that I love, Groove Scribe. Link in comments!

I start today talking about the anatomy of a note. After explaining note heads and stems, I explain that an empty note head without a stem is a whole note, equal to one whole measure (or one whole pie, in pie chart terms). Adding a stem to this empty note head makes a half note, equivelant to half a measure of time, or half a pie chart. Half of this is a quarter note, or a quarter of the measure. An eighth note is half of a quarter note, and able to divide the measure into perfect eighths. I then show the rudiments in this format. We then move on to some basic drum beats. I have the basic rock beat with more filled out 8th notes, the traditional blast beat, the basic thrash beat, and a beat I made up in groove scribe. See what crazy beats you can come up with! And also see if you can hear these beats in the music that you listen to.

I called "beaming" baring this whole class, I'm sorry. I will correct myself in a later course, but I hope the way I explained beaming still makes sense. Flags can turn into beams, and beam groups together within a beat.

I recommend starting to play beats as slow as 30 BPM. This might sound slow, but it´s usually where I start things. You can also play the blast beat in a quarter note setup, so that you can get the muscle memory for the spacing. It is hard to remember to say everything, thank you for reading.

Thank you so much for joining us!
Please enjoy our free course, and we will see you in the next one.
