Emilie started with a Roland virtual drum kit. While it's good for practicing silently in an apartment, it doesn't have the rich sound of an acoustic drum kit—especially the cymbals. Emilie's drum teacher had a student selling his kit, so we bought it. Fortunately, our music room is soundproofed, so we don't have to worry about inconveniencing the neighbors.
Because Emilie plays an acoustic kit during her lessons, it is much easier for her to practice now that her home setup matches her lesson setup. Also, the sound on a virtual kit is controlled by an amplifier, whereas the sound on an acoustic kit depends on the pressure and technique of the drumsticks. Since Emilie really enjoys practicing, the transition from virtual to acoustic was definitely the right decision.
