Indie-pop singer Emmy Jo wrote "yellow year." after the realization that happiness can not come from an external source but instead found within one's self. After first releasing this track in the summer of 2021, Emmy Jo connected with her friend and film Director, Detric Cook. Detric loved the song and offered to spearhead a music video for the track. Emmy Jo worked nights and weekends to create this music video while teaching high school.

The Reader described the Indie Pop musician, "With a sultry voice reminiscent of Sarah Bareilles and Adele, she navigates the space between singer-songwriter and soul."
