Djembe Drumming at Pine Point School with Matthew Dean

Students can expect a high energy, hands on experience as they learn traditional West African rhythms from Guinea, which have been played for hundreds of years. Rhythms will be taught at an easy-going pace that encourages laughter and builds community. Students will learn proper hand drumming techniques and will benefit from learning to play djembe as it fosters an understanding of patience, team building, listening skills and hand eye coordination.

Matthew Dean started playing djembe in 1995. He made 4 trips to Guinea, West Africa where he studied under Master Drummers and dancers of the renowned Les Ballet Africans, Ballet Djolibe and many more. Matthew now lives in CT and plays and teaches djembe for dance classes at local colleges and community centers. He can be seen playing congas, percussion and djembe with Sugar Band, a Southeastern CT cover band. He plays with high energy, big smiles and passion.
