On Saturday evening, June 29, I played a 30 minute set of experimental music at a house show put on by a group of lovely musicians in Pasadena. Four performances. I'll update this post with a link to the other sets when they're online.
I salvaged the drone patch from my cancelled "Up the Drone" set, and also brought along the SOMA Pipe I'd been planning to use for that, but the main new gizmo here is the Torso Electronics S-4 sampler, which is still not quite a feature-complete product but still gave me plenty to play around with. Four independent tracks of samples and ways of manipulating each one separately, really cool.
As I played, an artist drew live with oil pastels under a projector, and at the end of the show I got to take the drawing home with me. You can see the image over at my Instagram account, @marc_laidlaw_music.
Because I'm new to this, I was having volume issues and didn't realize the monitors pointing toward me were very loud and I should simply have asked for them to be turned down...as it is I kept turning down my volume, forcing the engineer to turn it up. I've got a lot to learn.
Also the first time I used the Pipe was the first time I got feedback from it...probably because of those loud monitors. Made me hesitant to use it too much.
In all, a really fun night, I was very appreciative to be invited to play for such a great group.
