Nicole Blair, author of FemPoetiks of American Poetry and Americana Music by Women: A Woman’s Truth, will describe what she means by the word FemPoetiks, how this phenomenon originated in American poetry by such poets as Anne Bradstreet, Phillis Wheatley, and Emily Dickinson and how it has developed over the past four hundred years to emerge in a variety of arts, but nowhere more powerfully than in Americana music. Blair will be joined in this session by two of the women she interviewed for her book, Beth McKee and Lynn Drury, both of whom have deep connections to the South, but particularly to New Orleans and its diverse and lively music scene. In this session, guests will have the opportunity to hear from these two artists first- hand not only what life is like for a woman in the music business, but also how vital it is to have a platform from which you can express your truth. This empowerment is at the heart of FemPoetiks.
