From his early days as a sock-wearing funk punk in L.A to the raw energy and uncluttered thump of the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s guitar-bass-and-drums lineup, Flea remains one of the most visible and iconic bassists of all time. But there’s a lot more to Flea - aka Michael Balzary - than just slappin’ the bass.

Before RHCP burst onto the scene, Flea was actually an accomplished jazz trumpeter. Even more impressive is his foray into acting, something he started in the mid-’80s.

In today’s new video Jonathan Herrera charts Flea’s incredible career, including his sideman chops with Alanis Morissette and his cameo in The Big Lebowski.
