Pífano (Portuguese Brazilian) or Pífaro (Portuguese Portuguese) or Pife is a small transverse flute, sharp, similar to a piccolo, but with a more intense and strident timbre, due to its smaller diameter. The fife originates from medieval Europe and is often used in military bands. In Brazil, the traditional fife is a cylindrical instrument with seven circular holes, one for blowing and the other for fingers. In general, it is an instrument very similar to the fife of other regions of the world. It can be constructed with various materials such as bamboo, taboca, taquara, bone, castor bean or, as it is more exploited nowadays, with PVC pipe, an alternative for the scarcity of natural raw material. It is found in three sizes: 65cm to 70cm, called "ruler-whole", 50cm, called "three-quarters", and 40cm, called "small ruler". The sound varies according to the length of the fife. [1]

The fife is a traditional instrument from the northeast of Brazil. His players, mostly, are people without erudition who transmit the culture of the fife by the oral tradition - both the confection and the repertoire, which usually dispenses score, being played by ear. In the Northeast, there are still the traditional "fife bands", "cabaçal pife bands", "woman warm" or "zabumba suit", being composed of two chiefly fife, accompanied generally by a deaf, tarol and a hype or zabumba, in addition to other phalans.
