In 1956 Gene Vincent wrote "Be Bop A Lula", it was the B-side of his first single 'Woman Love', it was produced by Capital Records producer Ken Nelson. His publisher Bill Lowery pressed promotional copies of "Be Bop A Lula" and sent them to radio stations throughout the country. By the time Capitol released the single, "Be Bop A Lula" had already gained attention from the public and radio DJs. The song was picked up and played by other U.S. radio stations (obscuring the original A-side) and became a hit!! It spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 reaching No:7, and 20 weeks on the Cash Box chart reaching No:5 and launching Vincent's career as a Rock 'n' Roll star.
His hit with his backing band the 'Blue Caps' is considered a significant early example of Rockabilly. His chart career was brief, especially in his home country of the U.S., where he notched three top 40 hits in 1956 and 1957, he never charted in the top 100 again. In the UK, he was a somewhat more bigger star, racking up eight hits from 1956 to 1961.
Rolling Stone magazine listed "Be Bop A Lula" at number 103 on it's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time"
Richie Unterberger of AllMusic called Vincent "an American rockabilly legend who defined the greasy-haired, leather-jacketed, hot rods 'n' babes spark of Rock 'n' Roll".
In 1956 Gene Vincent appeared in the movie "The Girl Can't Help It" along with legends Eddie Cochran, Little Richard & Fats Domino, it has been called the "most potent' celebration of rock 'n' roll ever captured on film!!
Gene Vincent died in 1971, from a combination of a ruptured ulcer, internal haemorrhage and heart failure while visiting his father in Saugus California. He is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall, California, he was 36.

In 1997, Vincent was inducted into the 'Rockabilly Hall of Fame'.
In 1998, he was inducted into the 'Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame'.
In 2003, Vincent was honoured with the "Norfolk's Legends of Music Walk of Fame".
In 2012, his band the Blue Caps, were retroactively inducted into the 'Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame'. alongside Vincent.
