Got wrinkles in your bass drum reso head to control overtones? TRY THIS INSTEAD! Hello everyone. Here's my latest YT highlight reel from my newest step-by-step drum tuning lesson
"HOW TO FIX A WRINKLED RESO HEAD ON A BASS DRUM " which is now streaming at https://www.kennysharretts.com/video-courses. To celebrate the release of this lesson I'm giving away a PR48 Bass Drum Mic like the one I used in this video. Find out how to enter at https://www.kennysharretts.com/heil-pr48-giveaway. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited, or where stated in the contest rules. In this video I discuss a drum tuning topic that was inspired by my real life experiences as a tech helping drummers actually GET the bass drum sound/feel they want, without changing the feel of the kick too much. That topic is leaving wrinkles in your bass drum reso head in order to control low end overtones, to control a ringing kick with unwanted overtones, or just to get "the lowest tone possible". In the modern live sound environment I can absolutely understand the “why” for these reasons , and “why” they were effective in the moment the technique was used. Everyone knows that if the bass drum is humming funny ya just detune a pair of lugs, and voila! No hum. LOLOL!! AND THE FUNNY PART IS IT’S TRUE! LOLOL! When it’s time for the show, ya gotta do what ya gotta do! In the end, however, having a wrinkled head can greatly reduce the amount of tone the drum gives you, which in turn reduces the amount of control you have over the overtones of the drum. In addition the wrinkles can actually hamper your ability to get the lowest tone possible. So in this video I show you how using a balanced head tuned as low as it can go will give you ALL the low end you could hope for. Yet because it's balanced you don't get annoying unwanted overtones or super deep overtones that ring out. Just pure bottom end. You also get to hear how you can still get a pretty darn good (but dry) kick sound with a wrinkled head BECAUSE THE HEAD IS BALANCED! LOL! This is made more so evident as the front bass drum head has no port, or internal muffling. Just a single Ahead Bass Drum Gel Mute on the reso head. In addition these bass drum heads are single ply coated ambassador weights. So there's no internal dampening rings on the head. An old school bass drum sound for sure, but it still sounds huge. Learn step-by-step how I cleaned up a wrinkles bass drum reso to help create a huge kick tone with no overtones. Stream the lesson at www.kennysharretts.com to get a great drum tuning lesson, AND to help support my YT channel. Thanks for watching. As always, please like, share, and subscribe.
