Nile Rodgers became famous playing rhythm guitar for the group Chic, but he is also one of the most famous hired guns in the history of studio work, with features including Diana Ross (Diana), David Bowie (Let's Dance), Paul Simon (Hearts and Bones), Madonna (Like a Virgin), Cyndi Lauper (True Colors), Avicii (Lay Me Down), Daddy Yankee (Legendaddy), Daft Punk (Get Lucky) and many many more. He is actually one of my favorite musicians in the sense that I would love to be a hired gun, a session guitarist, like Nile or Jimmy Page. A guitar for hire has this really cool mercenary vibe to it, except it is peace, love and music instead of violence.
