“...nothing feels quite like playing with Bill. He’s an amazing drummer. He’s the center of the Dead, the anchor.” – #MickeyHart
Before the Dead, #BillKreutzmann was teaching basic drumming at Dana Morgan’s Music Store in Palo Alto, where #JerryGarcia was also giving guitar lessons. The two had their first jam session in the back of that shop, and not long after, Jerry invited Bill to join The Warlocks.
Bill remained a core part of the band from that point on, known for his intuitive rhythm and steady presence. When asked what advice he’d give aspiring drummers, he said:
“If they want to become a drummer, not only should they study drums, they should study piano. And they should learn keys and relative harmonics—melody, basically. That should be as much a part of the drum lesson as the drumming itself.”
