If there's one thing everybody can agree on, it's that Green Onions rules. This 1962 classic manages to be incredibly simple, funky, and hypnotic all at the same time. Green Onions wasn't just a worldwide R&B/pop hit; it reverberated in the blues world. Tons of bands played it nightly, and Eddie Taylor and Magic Slim both had memorable versions. Rice Miller's "Help Me", one of the most played blues songs there is, came out in '63. This is a great song to get comfortable improvising. At the beginning, I tried to play it like the record, and then I improvised as an example. You can focus on playing short phrases that compliment or answer each other. Using a looper helps too. Or you can go all out and try one of the many organ simulator pedals available. I just picked up anElectro Harmonix C9, so taking it for a test drive on this was a no-brainer! NOLA guitarist Vic Shepherd turned me on to it and gave me some tips about it. Vic's got a savvy guitar youtube channel that I enjoy-- check it out.
