Hallelujah, Holy Spirit | Kristo ni nyaka ni | Ululation | Saint Augustine Melody Choir

“Hallelujah, Holy Spirit,” and “Kristo ni nyaka ni,” are performed by the Saint Augustine Melody Choir from Christ the King Catholic Church (Arua District in northern Uganda). Lugbara, or Lugbarati, is the language of the Lugbara people. It is spoken in the West Nile region in northwestern Uganda, as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Orientale Province.

The first song was sung on Pentecost Sunday 2019 in Ediofe Roman Catholic Cathedral in Arua. The second song, “Kristo ni nyaka ni.” is a Holy Communion hymn completely composed in the Lugbarati language by Reverend Father John Mundua, A.J. (Institute of the Apostles of Jesus). This was sung at the New Year’s Day 2020 Mass at The Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs, Namugongo. Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, in Central Uganda.

The chairman of the Saint Augustine Melody Choir is Mr. Candia Kizito. The Saint Augustine Melody Choir from Christ the King Catholic Church in Arua is a choir that is rising in popularity due to their dynamic, energetic, awe-inspiring, solid 4-part harmony. They recently purchased a bus that they use to sing at different places in Uganda to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Ululation is a word from the Latin, “ululo,” meaning a long, wavering, high-pitched vocal sound resembling a howl with a trilling quality. It is produced by emitting a high pitched loud voice accompanied with a rapid back and forth movement of the tongue and the uvula. Ululation is practiced as part of singing, on occasions of communal events, and is used to express strong emotion.

Ululation is commonly practiced in most of Africa; the Middle East; and Central-to-South Asia, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bengal, Odisha, and Assam in India, and Sri Lanka. Ululation is rooted in the culture of northern, eastern and southern Africa and is widely practiced in Tanzania, Kenya, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Sudan, Ethiopia-Eritrea, Somalia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It is used by women to give praises at weddings and all other celebrations. It is a general sound of good cheer and celebration, when good news has been delivered in a place of gathering, even in church.

«Alléluia, Saint-Esprit» et «Kristo ni nyaka ni» sont interprétés par le chœur Saint Augustine Melody de l'Église catholique Christ-Roi (district d'Arua, au nord de l'Ouganda). Lugbara, ou Lugbarati, est la langue du peuple Lugbara.
