I discuss Richard Hunter's pioneering text Jazz Harp published in 1980. I actually bought the book in 1980! Two big things I got from this book was an inspiration to really take the chromatic harp seriously AND to approach the instrument with the mindset and discipline of a jazz horn player. I can't believe the QUANTITY of excellent material in the book. I've decided to split my discussion into 2 or 3 parts (likely 3) and in this first one I focus on some of the diatonic harp exercises in the book. I then discovered that I missed a couple of other spots in the book where there are other diatonic exercises so I will work some of them up to speed and come back and play some of them for you. They really are great and will get you playing the harp from hole #1 to hole #10. THEN part 3 would like to discuss some of the chromatic exercises in the book and maybe tackling one of the transcribed solos. The book is packed with hidden gems for harmonica players but you have to push past the barrier of both standard music notation and tablature.
