Him and Them
Him
I go about my day
Buying and selling used things
Trying to make a profit
Get my next meal and pay my rent
Them
The children see him and run
They stumbled across this monster
They scream and they are afraid
What is this terrible thing they are
Him
Yes my life changed the day of the fire
My face is not what it was
Some say I am the phantom
Kids run when they come upon me
Them:
Some cannot look at his face
They turn away and walk
Not noticing what he has to sell
Others take the step to be normal
Him:
But some people approach me
With caution in their face
They try to treat me like anyone else
With so much curiosity in their mind
Them:
Try as I may to see him as
Just another guy that I meet today
But his looks are so different
Not like anyone else I know
Background:
This song is about a man I saw once (many years ago and I never forgot) at flee market. He had a booth and was selling things. His face was terribly disfigured. I suspect from a fire. Children and adults found his face frightening. I would describe him as looking similar to Lon Chaney phantom of the opera. I also had images of Aqualung in my mind while writing these lyrics.
I works up early one Saturday morning with this 6/4 rhythm in my head. That little pause at the 4th beat the second time through was prominent. I could not go back to sleep so I got up and started working on this song. The rhythm doesn’t sound as nice as it did in my sleepy head. But I decided to stay with it anyway. I thought it was unique and made for an interesting song. I already had the lyrics partially jotted down and I thought the changing 6/4 patterns. From 4-2 to 2-1-2-1 fit the him and them teller context. The idea of doing a 3-3 bridge came when I wanted to play a lead guitar section.
There are a few changes in the him and them sections I would like to point out. I added phaser to the Them sections. The lead guitar is a on different sides on the Him and Then sections. left for Him and right for Them. I hope you enjoy this little investigation of my mind on this topic. I would like to hear your thoughts regarding someone as who is quite disfigured.
Usually songs take me a couple days to complete. This one came together quickly that Saturday morning. I guess it helped to have all of the pieces either in my head or jotted down in my phone notes.
